For many of young, the onset of adolescence brings not only changes to their bodies but also new vulnerabilities to human rights abuses, particularly in the arenas of sexuality, marriage and childbearing. Millions of girls are coerced into unwanted sex or marriage, putting them at risk of unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, and dangerous childbirth. Adolescent boys are at risk, as well. Young people – both boys and girls – are disproportionately affected by HIV. Yet too many young people face barriers to reproductive health information and care. There is need to work towards giving them accurate information about their health and rights and information about the services needed to protect their health. (more…)

The Day of the African Child (DAC) is commemorated in June every year continues to raise awareness on the rights of the children. Mazowe District celebrated the day on the 27^th of June at Shingirirai High School in support of the rights of children through denouncing the societal scourge of marrying children under the age of 18. Roots under RHRN in July attended the Southern African Regional Students and Youth Conference (SARSYC) in Zambia with the theme Plan,prioritize and prevent. Today we had a side session on concerted advocacy for SRHR for young people.

The conference calls for the prioritization of key populations amongst the youth constituency. These are students in institutions of higher learning with a special focus on the female student, LGBTI young people, young people with disabilities and young people living with HIV.The conference also calls on governments and stakeholders to effectively plan for the realization of young people’s sexual reproductive health and ensure that there is a coordinated response in addressing students and young people’s sexual reproductive challenges.

The conference gives a special focus on the girl child and calls on all stakeholders to join the efforts towards preventing early and unintended pregnancies which usually escalates to unsafe abortions and deaths, whilst ensuring that girls remain in schools until they complete their education. This calls for strengthening Comprehensive Sexuality Education and access to contraception services for young women and men.

Since June ROOTS has hosted AYP (Adolescents and Young People) dialogues in Mash Central. This was a community dialogue for our Bindura AYP. We discussed Access to SRH services in Bindura, peer pressure and possible solutions to challenges faced by AYP on SRH in Bindura. The dialogues have drawn large numbers from the youth and community buy in is evident as Zaoga and Catholic churches have requested we involve their Youths in future discussions.
