Getting “ready for red” with Sassy pads – ROOTS pads making project in progress

As Real Open Opportunities for Transformation Support we have an exciting project where we are partnering with women the Shamva community to produce pads that are cheaper than those on the current market to enable the ordinary woman in local rural communities to access quality yet affordable sanitary wear. The project was made possible through the partnership of ROOTS with the Netherlands Embassy where the machine that produces pads was donated to the local women in Shamva. On the 4th of September 2018, The ROOTS team met with several women from the local area in Shamva who were then trained on how to make pads using a machine that is both efficient and user friendly. The trainer was none other than Mr. Shyamsundar Vasant Bedekar; from Gujarat, India; the man who designed the machine himself; who came to Zimbabwe for this particular project. The training kicked off with him explaining clearly and in great detail how the machine works. The machine is made up of five different components, is user friendly and does not require a high level of expertise. Many people can utilise the machine at the same time rotating between stands and the machine makes quality pads in a cost effective way. Participants quickly grasped presented methodologies as Mr. Shayamsundar proved to be a good trainer and/or demonstrator as participants quickly grasped instructions. Altogether participants enjoyed the process and there was a general positive feeling around all proceedings and the training was a success.
Climate Change, GBV and Child Marriage: Exploring the nexus

The 1st of February 2018 witnessed the Field Day of the Culture ACTIONs Climate Change Risk Adaptation Planning and Resilience Training at Cranham Community Shade (Ward 31). The day was facilitated by the Southern Alliance For Indigenous Resources (SAFIRE) to engage the community in climate risk management were current and future climate risks and their socio –economic ramifications are explored in the effort of reducing community vulnerability through building community resilience. Climate change risk identification and analysis tools which include the Seasonal Calendar, Historical Timeline, Hazard Mapping, Vulnerability Matrix and Transit Walks were used on the day to understand the severity of the situation in (Ward 31).
ROOTS hands over sanitary pad making machine to child brides in Shamva

Women empowerment organisation, Roots in partnership with Netherlands Embassy in Zimbabwe donated a sanitary pad making machine to women in Shamva as part of the empowerment agenda.
The donation was part of the district’s belated commemorations of International Women’s Day.
My Dignity! ROOTS promoting Menstrual Health among young women in Rural Communities

The Provincial International Women’s Day celebrations were held at Shamva Country Club a day which coincided with the commissioning of a sanitary pad making machine from the Embassy of Netherlands Ambassador Barbra Van Helmond. The day ran under theme economic posterity for women as several speakers which included Provincial Development Officer, Minister of State for Mashonaland Central, Gender commissioner and Chief Bushu who all advocated for the need for women to diversify their economic activities with the need to venture into more challenging but economic rewarding projects such as fisheries, mining and tourism.
Traditional and Religious Leaders Indaba

Traditional and Religious Leaders Indaba was a platform for leaders to discuss GBV issues that affect areas of their jurisdiction. The event was held at Mazowe Rural District Council Tsungubvi Board Room on the 16th March 2018. The indaba sought to sensitize stakeholders, traditional and religious leaders on the need to review retrogressive social norms and practices that precipitate GBV in Mazowe District with the aim of gaining lasting commitments from the leaders in the fight to reduce GBV incidences.
